bokashi workshops

The bokashi workshop will take place at the Crazy for Composting 2025 event during Breakout Sessions 2:15–3:45 pm.

We will cover application guidelines on the bokashi method for preparing your soil whether in late fall, during the winter, or early spring. 

We will make Activated EM (i.e., the bokashi microbes, aka bokashi spray) which is one of the main microbial applications to soil and organic matter (including fall leaves, plant clippings, twigs/branches, and food waste). 

How to use the bokashi microbes to improve your soil, as well as, do non-food-waste bokashi composting. 

The 4th Annual Compost Carnival is a free, family-friendly event to celebrate and educate about one of the biggest sustainability initiatives to ever come to NYC: Citywide Curbside Organics Collection. 

A bokashi tabling will be there providing information with sample demonstration items and someone to explain the bokashi method.

In this bokashi workshop, learn about applications to gardening, as well as, food waste and composting. We will make two of the fundamental components of the bokashi method: bokashi sprinkle (also bokashi bran or wheat bran bokashi) and bokashi spray (also Activated EM or bokashi microbes). on Avenue B and 9th Street 

The LUNGS (Loisaida United Neighborhood Gardens) Spring Awakening begins with a parade (12 pm – 1 pm) that starts from one community garden (El Sol Brillante) and goes by other community gardens in the neighborhood. 

From 1 pm until 4 pm, there are several events happening on Avenue B (around 8th and 9th Streets) and in the community gardens in the area.
